Chris was born in Zimbabwe and has lived in Southern Africa most of his life. He spent most of his working career in the property development field.
Sandi, who was born in Kwazulu Natal, South Africa and whose first language was Zulu, was employed by DHL and was transferred to Botswana in 2001 where they both met.
In 2004 they moved to Tanzania where Sandi was employed as the Managing Director for DHL and Chris spent more time on his hobby of rebuilding classic cars and they now are the proud owners of 6 classic cars including Triumph TR3A, TR4A and TR6, two classic Volvos and a VW Beetle of which 3 are based at the lodge, being the Volvos and the TR4A.
In December 2007, while driving from Dar es Salaam to Durban in their newly restored Triumph TR4A, they passed through Malawi and using the long hours of driving, gradually decided that they would like a change of occupation and would look for a bed and breakfast to own and run in Malawi.
Chris then returned to Malawi in February 2008 to look for a suitable place to purchase and they became the proud owners of Ngala Beach lodge (slightly more than a bed and breakfast) in May 2008.
They have jointly done a lot of work at the lodge, in the areas of refurbishment new development and staff training to bring the lodge up to the standard that it is now at. Business has been growing steadily over the last 3 years and they have developed a great rapport with guests, a number of whom have become regular visitors and good friends. Others from further afield keep in touch using email and social media.
During a quiet period between the months of August and October 2011, Chris and Sandi joined a group of classic cars travelling together from Cape Town to Cairo in their 1964 Volvo 122S which was a lifetime experience and also great fun especially as they got to visit family and friends on the way down to the start in Cape Town. Sandi wrote a blog on the trip which can be found at Volvo-2-vhere.blogspot.com and capetocairo.blogspot.com. On the way back from Cairo, they flew into Harare to collect the latest classic car acquisition being a 1963 Volvo P1800S (as was driven by Roger Moore when he played Simon Templar in the TV series “The Saint”).
Chris and Sandi, love meeting people and believe that cleanliness, service and quality are critical criteria in running a lodge. Sandi is responsible for ‘the front of house functions’ i.e. Reception, Kitchen, Restaurant and House Keeping and ensuring that the customers are comfortable and happy whilst Chris takes care of all the maintenance, gardening, bar and accounts. They enjoy hosting guests and treat all their residents as special friends and endeavour to accommodate their every requirement.
